No need for fancy equipment or chemicals, just a few ingredients and some elbow grease.

So, sit back, grab a cup of coffee, and let’s dive into the world of headstone cleaning. We promise it’s not as boring as it sounds!

Understanding Gravestones

Before we dive into the best DIY headstone cleaners, let’s take a minute to understand headstones. Gravestones come in different shapes, sizes, and materials.

Some of the most common materials used for gravestones include marble, granite, and sandstone.

It’s important to know the type of headstone you’re dealing with before you start cleaning it. Different materials require different cleaning methods, and using the wrong method could damage the headstone.

For example, you wouldn’t clean a marble headstone the same way you would clean a granite headstone.

Weather conditions, soil type, and the amount of debris surrounding the headstone can also affect the cleaning process. For example, if the headstone is in a shady and damp area, it might be more prone to moss and algae growth.

On the other hand, if the headstone is in a sunny and dry area, it might be more prone to dust and dirt buildup.

It’s also important to consider the age of the headstone. Older grave markers might be more delicate and require a gentler cleaning method.

In the next sections, we’ll go over the best DIY headstone cleaners and how to use them. But first, let’s take a look at some common household ingredients that you can use for cleaning headstones.

Precautions When You Clean Headstones

While DIY gravestone cleaners are a safe and effective way to clean headstones, there are a few precautions that you should take to protect the stone and ensure that it doesn’t get damaged.

  1. Protect the stone: Before you start cleaning, make sure to cover the surrounding area with a drop cloth to protect it from any cleaning solution that might splash onto it.
  2. Safety measures: When using household cleaners, make sure to wear gloves to protect your hands and avoid getting any cleaning solution in your eyes.
  3. Avoiding damage: When cleaning headstones, be careful not to scrub too hard or use any abrasive materials that might scratch the surface.

Homemade Headstone Cleaner Vs Commercial Cleaners

You might be wondering why you would choose a homemade stone cleaner over a commercial cleaning solution. Well, there are a few reasons why a DIY cleaning product might be the way to go on your marble or granite stone.

First of all, homemade tombstone cleaners are often cheaper than commercial cleaners. You probably already have most of the ingredients (like soapy water) in your home, and if you don’t, they’re easy to find at your local store.

Second, homemade cleaners are often gentler on the stone than commercial cleaners. They’re made from natural ingredients that won’t harm the stone or the environment.

And last but not least, homemade cleaners are often just as effective at removing dirt and stains as commercial cleaners. You might be surprised by the results you get from a simple mixture of baking soda and water!

But, that’s not to say that commercial cleaners aren’t a good option to remove dirt and stains. In fact, commercial cleaners can be a great choice for those who don’t have the time or the desire to make their own cleaner spray.

They’re often specially formulated for headstones, so you know you’re getting a product that’s specifically designed for the job.

So, what’s the verdict? Well, it really depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a cheap and easy option, a homemade cleaner (or even using simple dish soap) might be the way to go.

But if you’re looking for a quick and convenient option for gravestone cleaning, a commercial cleaner might be the better choice.

    Hi Joshua,

The biggest issue I have to deal with is hard water residue from the cemetery sprinklers. Do you have any remedies for cleaning and removing it without damaging the shiny marble finish?

    • Joshua R

A marble cleaning product and microfiber cloth/towel would probably be best for your marble headstones. Using something acidic could damage the stone so I wouldn’t take a chance with using those things personally.
